This page gives an overview of how to use the WS_FTP program to upload web pages from a Windows based computer. WS_FTP is the only Windows FTP client supported by Academic Computing, though others will work. The unsupported software includes the "Publish" or "Upload" feature of web page creation software such as Dreamweaver and FrontPage.
Run WS_FTP LE. This should be located in your Start menu. If you are university faculty or staff, and WS_FTP is not installed, contact the help desk and ask to have it installed before proceeding. If you are a student, or faculty/staff working from home, WS_FTP can be downloaded from Ipswitch, Inc. for free. See the link at the bottom of the page for details.
Click the 'New' button. For profile name, enter "UW-Oshkosh web" or a similar name to identify what profile this is. For Host Name, enter ftp.www.students.uwosh.edu if you are updating a student home page, or ftp.www.uwosh.edu if you are updating a department, college, faculty/staff, or other web page. Enter your username (same as e-mail username) in the User ID box, and your password in the password box. For Staff
For Students
Click the Startup tab. In the Initial Remote Site Folder box, enter the FTP path given to you when your account was created. If you are a student updating a personal home page, this should be public_html. Once you have filled out the necessary information, click the Apply button to save this profile, then the OK button to connect.
You should now be logged in. The file listing on the right shows files located on the web server. If this is the first time you are logging in, there will likely be only one file called home.html. This page is the one displayed by default, you should replace it with one of your own design.
The file listing on the left shows your computer's files. If necessary, You can scroll to the bottom to choose a drive, then navigate through the folders to find the pages you want to upload.
Choose the files you want to upload by clicking them with the mouse. You may select multiple files at once by holding the Ctrl key on the keyboard when clicking the mouse button. If you have both text and pictures to upload, select all of one type or the other. For HTML, CSS, and other plaintext files, choose the ASCII mode option. For other files (pictures, animations, word processor documents, etc.) choose Binary mode. When you have selected the files and transfer mode, click the "-->" button to transfer the files to the server. When you have completed transferring fils, click the Exit button to disconnect and close WS_FTP. If you are UW Oshkosh Faculty or Staff and you do not have WS_FTP LE on your PC, contact the Academic Computing Help Desk and ask that this free software be installed on your University owned computer. WS_FTP LE is free to individuals for home use, and free to Faculty, Staff and Students for educational use. The latest version of WS_FTP LE can be downloaded from Ipswitch, Inc.. For Macintosh users, the recommended FTP software is called Fetch. |
