How to Use SmartFTP for uploading campus web pages

The following is a brief tutorial to demonstrate how to use SmartFTP to upload to the campus web server.

Run SmartFTP. SmartFTP should be located in your Start menu if your computer was set up by Academic Computing. If you are university faculty or staff, and SmartFTP is not installed, contact the help desk and ask to have it installed before proceeding. If you are a student, or faculty/staff working from home, you can download and install SmartFTP from the SmartFTP home page at smartftp.com.

After running SmartFTP, you should have a window similar to the one above.

If you don't see "Local Browser 1" displaying the files on your computer, bring it up now by selecting "Local Browser" from the FTP menu, or pressing Control+L.

The e-mail you received with the detail for the pages your are editing included the ftp server and path. The following are some examples of common paths:

For faculty/staff home pages:
ftp.www.uwosh.edu/information/www/home_pages/faculty_staff/username

For Departments and organizations:
ftp.www.uwosh.edu/information/www/home_pages/departments/deptname
ftp.www.uwosh.edu/information/www/home_pages/organizations/orgname

For Student home pages:
ftp.www.students.uwosh.edu
(don't enter a path, the server will default to your home directory)

Enter the FTP server and path in the Address bar at the top, as follows (in this example, it is a staff home page):

Enter your FTP user name and password in the appropriate fields:

Press Enter while in the password field, OR click the connect button to connect to the server.

After connecting, you will get a new window displaying the files on the server:

This is a bit messy, you can click one of the buttons in the tool bar, or select one of the views from the Window menu as shown. Horizontal is the easiest to see all the file details, vertical is more like some other FTP clients. Horizontal layout is shown below.

In this case, "Local Browser 1" (your computer's files) is on top, and the web server on the bottom. You can drag the windows to any arrangement you prefer.

Now you can simply drag-and-drop files and folders from one window to the other. When you are finished transferring files, close the "ftp.www.uwosh.edu" window to disconnect and exit SmartFTP.
