Using SMTP from off campus
The easiest method to send mail from off campus is to use the smtp servers you ISP provides. The method below is an alternative to using your ISPs mail servers to send mail. This is useful if your ISP does not allow you to send mail using your uwosh.edu address or you have a laptop that is brought between your home and the campus network.
Because of problems with SPAM, we do not allow access to smtp.uwosh.edu from off campus using the standard port 25. We do allow users to send email from anywhere using an alternative port. This requires that you change the default port on your client to port 587. And due to security concerns, we only allow encrypted and authenticated connections to this port. There are instructions for the most common clients below. Outlook 2003 will work but previous Outlook and Outlook Express clients will not work due to problems with SSL on non-standard ports.
