Accessing your uwosh.edu E-Mail Account from home with aMacintosh Computer

Running OS 8 or 9 and Eudora Mail

(updated July 16, 2002)

There are several options for checking your mail fromhome.  This handout will list a fewand detail a setup of Eudora for the Macintosh computer.

Options for accessing your account:

  1. Subscribe to an Internet Service Provider(ISP, such as NorthNet or RoadRunner) and use Eudora or a different POP3 mail client such as Outlook Express.
  2. Check your uwosh.edu account via webmail at webmail.uwosh.edu
  3. Forward your uwosh.edu e-mail to a different e-mail account such as hotmail or yahoo mail.
  4. Direct text only modem connection into your VaxA account.

This hand out will only focus on using Eudora, if you havequestions about any of the other options please call 920-424-3020, or stop byDempsey 207.

Steps to installing andsetting up your Eudora 5.x account at home

Step 1:  Insertthe CD or download the program. Eudora comes in 3 different flavors.

  • Paid mode (UW Oshkosh has a site license for University owned machines)
  • Sponsored mode (full version, contains advertising. Free to users)
  • Light mode (Free to user, no ads, less features)

The following screen will appear click Continue.

Next a list of system requirements will be displayed in aRead Me text file.  Look over theseif you wish then click Continue.

Glance over the software license agreement and then click Agree.

Click the Install button on this screen.

Choose a folder to place the Eudora program in, if you justselect the Hard Drive a folder will be created for you.  Press the Choose button once you have selected a place to installthe program.

After the program has installed click on the Quit button.

Once you have installed the program launch it by clicking on the Eudora icon in the folder you installed the program to.

Once in the program go to the special/settings menu.

Under username you will need to enter you uwosh.eduusername.  That is the part of youre-mail address preceding the @ symbol.

Next set the mail server to uwosh.edu and the real name to your full name as you wish it to appear on out going mail.

Next move to the sending mail portion of settings, on theleft hand side of the screen.

Once here change the SMTP server to your Internet Server Providers sever address.  This is very important, as if not set correctly you will be unable to send mail.  If you have NorthNet the address is as below.  Otherwise you will have to contact your ISP for this information.

Next move to checking mail and attachments.  Under these there are several settings that can customize the feel and function of Eudora.  You should be especially conscious of leaving mail on the server if you wish to pick it up for another location later and deleting attachments as messages are deleted in Eudora.

Lastly you should be sure to check out the miscellaneous settings options. The box to paid attention to here is the empty trash on quit box.  This will cause your trash to emptied every time you exit Eudora, usually a good idea to keep your computer free of clutter.

Again if you have any further questions please contact the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh Academic Computing help desk at 920-424-3020, or e-mail at acshelp@uwosh.edu.
