Accessing Your uwosh.edu E-Mail Account From Home with a PC Running

Windows 95/98/2000/XP and Eudora Mail

(Last updated 1/05/2005)

There are different options to accessing your E-Mail from home. This handout notes some of the ways you can read user@uwosh.edu

E-Mail and in detail shows you how to do this with the Eudora E-Mail program.

Listed are 3 options:

1.        Subscribe to an Internet Service Provider (ISP, such as NorthNet or Road Runner) and use the Eudora E-Mail program.

2.        Subscribe to an Internet Service Provider and use a “POP3” mail client other than Eudora.

3.        Forward your uwosh.edu E-Mail to another E-Mail address

4.        Use webmail from a browser. At webmail.uwosh.edu

1.      Using Eudora at home

·         Purchase, install, and configure Eudora  (see www.eudora.com for the latest versions and how to purchase). Eudora Lite is

free but limits your options and features. Eudora Pro is currently the UW Oshkosh’s fully supported E-Mail program.

·         After Installing Eudora, Page 2, you will be able to access your UW Oshkosh E-Mail account after connecting to your ISP.

·         If you would like to use Eudora to access one or more other E-mail accounts, you have a couple choices:

a)       Multiple Personalities – Page 6. Not available with Eudora Light.

b)       Multiple Directories. Page 9.  Any Eudora mode.

2.      Use Netscape, Outlook Express, or other POP3 mailer

·         These E-Mail programs are currently unsupported by Academic Computing.

·         No known method on how to change your uwosh.edu password with these programs

3.      Forward your uwosh.edu E-mail to another E-Mail account - Page 12

·         Forward to your ISP E-Mail address or a Yahoo, Hotmail type account.

Disadvantages:

q       Limited disk space for your mail

q       Messages will probably bounce if you are over quota.

q       Consider how secure and private your mail is.

q       Are there many delays with E-Mail or times it is not available or working?

To Add a Personality to Eudora Pro

Adding personalities will allow you to check multiple E-Mail accounts from the same Eudora icon.

You need Eudora Pro to create Personalities. As we installed Eudora above, we made username@uwosh.edu the

first or “dominant” personality. The first account entered when install Eudora Pro will be the “dominate” personality.

To add your ISP’s E-Mail address as an Eudora Personality.

Create Separate Mailboxes for Multiple E-Mail Accounts

You can use this method as an alternative to using Personalities. Eudora Lite does not have the Personality feature.

You will create a separate folder (directory), with a different Eudora icon. In this method you will have separate

mailboxes for each account.

Step 1You only need to install Eudora Pro or Lite once. The first account would have it’s mailboxes created in the

folder where you installed Eudora (c:\Eudora preferably).

Step 10.

Double-click on the new icon. The Eudora wizard should launch.

Step 11.

Go to Page 2 and enter the same new account  information except for the E-Mail address and (Incoming Server).

In this example you would enter your ISP E-Mail address (i.e., user@northnet.net for the E-Mail address and

mail.northnet.net for the Incoming server. The Outgoing SMTP server would be mail.northnet.net in both example configurations.

Contact your ISP if you have questions on what these are.

Once complete; go through the Tools/Options like you did in the first configuration on Page 5.

You now should have two Eudora icons, one configured for your UW Oshkosh E-Mail address and one for your ISP.

You do not need to use Personalities when creating two separate icons and directories.
