Computer Lab Software Survey
by Academic Computing

Academic Computing is currently supporting in excess of 160 software packages in the general access computer labs. This situation is unmanageable both from the standpoint of human resources required, as well as the burden it places on the computer lab hardware. This number needs to be reduced to something more manageable. Focusing on truly "general access" software that is used by students in many disciplines will create a more stable lab environment and enhance student use of computing resources.

ACUG and the Provost's Administrative Staff approved sending a general access computer lab software survey to each of the colleges. Each college will respond with a list of software that it believes is essential to have available in the general access computer labs. Survey results will then be reviewed, with the intent to remove additional software titles that are no longer required by the colleges or that are not appropriate for the general access labs.

By May 15, 2000 colleges are to provide John Berens with a list of software in the general access computer labs that is essential for that college's curriculum. For those who do not respond to this survey, it will be concluded that there is no software in the general access labs that is essential to their curriculum.
