by Sarah Neises If you are looking for a piece of software to help you manage and create web sites, Macromedia Dreamweaver is an option worth exploring. Dreamweaver is an easy to use WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor that also gives you easy access to your raw HTML code. Dreamweaver lets you create pages using all of the basic web page design elements such as tables, frames, etc., and also lets you easily incorporate more advanced features like layers, templates, cascading style sheets and JavaScript. Dreamweaver has a History palette that allows you to backtrack through your editing to "undo" any step you took since you started your session working with the page. Dreamweaver offers easy to use site management features. For example, if you change the name of one of your HTML files, Dreamweaver automatically scans your web site for any links that point to the old filename and it will update the links to point to the new filename. This helps prevent broken links in your site. In addition, uploading files to a web server is a feature that is integrated very nicely into Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver allows you to set up multiple browsers to preview your page. For example, if you wanted to make sure your page was backward compatible, you can set Dreamweaver up to preview in Netscape 3.01, Internet Explorer 4.0, etc. Note that you must have those browsers loaded on your computer - they don't come bundled with Dreamweaver. Dreamweaver is available for both Macs and PCs. You must have (at least) 32 MB of RAM, although more is desirable. Dreamweaver does use floating toolbars also, so it is recommended that you set your screen resolution to at least 800 x 600. Read more about Dreamweaver at: http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/ . You can also download a 30-day demo from this site. Dreamweaver can be purchased from USI (Universal Solutions, Inc.) 1-248-945-5500 ext. 517 (Mary Ellen Rollands) for approximately $90. Dreamweaver is fully supported by the IT Division.
