File Storage
Information on file storage and collaborative file sharing options - TitanFiles and Novell.
TitanFiles
is a new file storage and collaboration tool available to all employees and students beginning with the Fall 2007 semester. It is powered by a system called Xythos, which makes web access and sharing of files easy. Unlike Novell, the ability to share both with other campus users and people off-campus is in the control of each user. We'll be offering courses on how to use this new system as soon as the semester starts.
- Students: All Students will be given 1/2 Gigibyte (500M) of
storage on TitanFiles. You can use the Public folder for your own web
site or ePortfolio. Create other folders to keep track of course work
or personal files. You can create a teamwork folder and grant
permissions for a class team to work together on all files in the
folder. Or you can create a "ticket" (special link) so you can share
your resume with off-campus employers.
- Faculty & Staff: Faculty and staff members will be given 1GB of storage on TitanFiles. They also have a Public folder for their own personal web page and can create other folders as needed for their jobs. Folders and files can be shared with students they are teaching, colleagues with whom they are researching, or keep them entirely private. In addition we can create a folder for them under the Courses heading to make it easier to share files with their classes or folders under the Groups heading to share with their unit or committee.
Novell is the University's solution to creating individual and shared network storage space. When logging in to a University-owned computer through the Novell (Windows-based) client, these network resources behave exactly like regular drives on that computer, but can be accessed from any UW-O Novell-enabled workstation that you log into. Additionally, personal U: drives can be accessed via your web browser at https://ed3.nds.it.uwosh.edu/oneNet/NetStorage/.
- Students: All Students are given a drive dedicated to them (U: drive) on which they can store any files they please (within the Acceptable Use guidelines). Student U: drives have 75MB of storage space. Additionally, each student has access to a drive (the Q: drive) that is shared among all Novell users on campus. Instructors frequently use this resource to distribute and collect files from students.
- Faculty & Staff: Faculty and staff members can have many Novell drives provided for them based on the requirements of their positions. All faculty and staff members also have their own personal space (U: drive) allocated for them, as well as being given access to the shared Q: drive. Often a departmental drive (R: drive typically) will be provided for sharing documents among coworkers.
