Standard usernames

At UW Oshkosh, a standardized system exists for determining the username that each person will use for most campus-related computer accounts. Note that not all computer systems will follow this pattern, but in most cases the username will be determined as follows. Exceptions may be made in the cases where existing usernames conflict with a new user. Please consult the Online Email Directory to confirm any username.

  • Students: Your standard UW-Oshkosh username will be based on up to the first five letters of your last name, followed by your first initial, followed by the last two digits of your 7-digit campus ID number.
  • Faculty & Staff: Your standard UW-Oshkosh username is based on up to the first seven letters of your last name, followed by your first initial.

Password Guidelines

In order to prevent the misuse of University computing resources, Academic Computing has a list of recommendations for choosing a strong password to guard your accounts. Please see these Password Guidelines for the ways in which you can reduce the chance of having one of your accounts compromised.

Password Change

New accounts require a password change before being used to access resources.  You will not be able to log in until you change your password.  For Windows and Novell, you will be prompted to change the password when you first attempt to log in. For E-Mail (and services which use the E-Mail server password such as Desire2Learn) and the web server, you need to change your password first using the Online Password Change page.

UW Oshkosh Web Page

UW Oskhosh provides FTP access to its web server for any faculty, staff member, or student who hosts a web site on the uwosh.edu domain. All faculty, staff and students are entitled to web space if they desire to host a site with the University. Additionally, many departments and organizations within and associated with the University have websites on the UW Oshkosh web server; all designers and maintainers designated by the organization are given FTP access to that department's site.

  • Students: Any student enrolled for classes may request web space on the University's web server. See http://www.students.uwosh.edu/ for details.
  • Faculty & Staff: Every staff and faculty member is eligible for a web site hosted by UW Oshkosh. These pages are located at "http://www.uwosh.edu/faculty_staff/[username]", although they may also be redirected to reside within the site of their department or organization.  Check the Faculty & Staff Home Page Directory for a list of faculty and staff home pages.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)

UW Oshkosh currently provides VPN services for all faculty, staff, and campus guests that have a justification for it.  VPN services are available by going to https://vpn.it.uwosh.edu.  Each email or guest account that wants to use the service needs to have it enabled.  Static IP addresses are also available.
