Academic Computing Plans and Projects
A brief list of our current projects
New for Fall 2008:
- Our new Academic Computing web site, using Plone content management system.
- TitanFiles upgrade. New user interface. Additional features: wiki, drop box, work flow.
- "Priority PC" service in the labs has been moved to the Windows boot of the Mac computers. We also added multimedia ports in the lab computers so you can work with media from digital cameras more easily.
- Pharos Print Management system in all GCA Labs, Polk Library, SLIC, and Residence Life. This fall will be a pilot project to collect data on use of campus printers.
- Apple Service Center extended to student- and employee-owned computers. The University Bookstore will handle in-take, but Academic Computing's Apple Certified staff will handle repairs.
Additional Fall 2008 Projects:
- Implement Apple Task Server and management of campus Macs via a central server
- Inventory departmental labs, define level of support needed, and set an upgrade schedule.
- Synchronize Novell and Windows logins using Novell's IDM.
- Install new Help Desk management software to include self-service options.
- Implement video surveillance in the GCA Labs.
- Review email service options with Residence Life.
Spring 2008 Projects:
- Virtual Server Environment to reduce cost of individual server projects and provide a robust test/development environment.
- Replacing the GCA Lab Print Management System to reduce printing time, provide reporting on the number of print jobs used by each student, balance the print load across all printers in a lab, provide wireless printing capabilities in the Library, and provide a single, campus-wide print solution.
- Upgrade TitanMail to latest version. Features include: multiple and sharable address books, ability to attach files to calendar events, and support for Safari browser.
New for Fall 2007:
- TitanFiles implementation - file collaboration system powered by Xythos which will be available for all employees and students as of the Fall 2007 semester.
- Instant Messaging - using the Sun IM product everyone having a TitanMail account will be able to communicate via IM.
- General Computer Lab Updates - annual update of 1/3 of the 465 computers in the 5 GCA labs; this year we are replacing all Macintosh computers in all labs and all computers in the Clow lab.
